This is an example of the attire worn by Army Medical Department non-commissioned officers and soldiers using the Type 98 Summer Tunic. In this example, the rank is Sergeant, and the individual is wearing the Medical Department identification insignias established in Showa 18.

As explained in the article on medics wearing the Tropics 2/3 Sleeves Shirt, non-commissioned officers and soldiers of the Medical Department carried bags marked with the Red Cross. The medic’s bag was called a Bandage Kit (Hōtai-nō/繃帯嚢), while the medical non-commissioned officer’s bag was referred to as a Medical Kit (Iryō-nō/醫療嚢).

The Type 98 Summer Tunic used here is a modified version of the one produced by S&Graf. The dark green Medical Department identification insignias, established in Showa 18 and located below the collar rank insignias, as well as the Red Cross Patch on the left arm, are replicas I created myself.

Example of Attire

Soldiers carry a Bandage Kit (Hōtai-nō/包帯嚢), while non-commissioned officers carry a Medical Kit . According to the uniform regulations, medics are generally not supposed to have a Bread Bag (Zatsu-nō/雑嚢), but in actual mobilized units, they may sometimes be allowed to carry one. When wearing the bread bag, it seems they hung it over the right shoulder, just like the canteen.

The standard attire for a medic is as follows:

  1. Carry the canteen from the right shoulder to the left hip, ensuring the canteen strap buckle comes to the front of the body by switching the canteen around front to back.
  2. Fasten the infantry belt with the bayonet attached.
  3. Sling the Medical Kit (or Bandage Kit ) from the left shoulder to the right bottom and secure it to the body with a dedicated narrow belt. The Medical Kit belt is fastened under the infantry belt. Depending on the situation, the Medical Kit can be moved to the front of the body for use.
  4. Suspend the gas mask bag (Hikō-nō/被甲嚢) from the right shoulder to the left bottom.

An Example of Wearing

This is an example of actual wear in a airsoft game. I wear alternative shoes with rubber soles because studded lace-up boots tend to slip on gravel or concrete.
