This is a set consisting of the Red Cross Patch worn on the left arm by Japanese Army Medical Department NCOs and enlisted men, together with the identification badge attached below the rank insignia.
The Red Cross Patch has been faithfully reproduced based on an original example and period specifications, following the 1939 (Shōwa 14) regulation. For further details, please refer to this article.
In the early version of the Red Cross Patch established in 1908 (Meiji 41), the materials differed between those for officers/warrant officers and those for NCOs/enlisted men, with the former being made of slightly finer fabric. From the 1939 regulation onward, this distinction was abolished, allowing this reproduction to be used for portraying both army doctors and medical officers.
Additionally, in pre-1939 Patches, stamps of divisional headquarters and other units are sometimes seen instead of that of the Army Ministry. Nevertheless, this item can be appropriately worn with uniforms such as the Type 5 (Shōwa 5) model.
Finally, this set also includes the dark green identification badge—often overlooked when recreating Medical Department NCOs/enlisted men—made to match the cushion-style rank insignia established in 1943 (Shōwa 18).
How to Wear
- Sew the Red Cross Patch onto the left upper sleeve of the uniform.
- The Medical Department identification badge should be attached below the rank insignia so that the dark green line is visible. If the rank insignia has been made into a pin badge, the identification badge can be placed underneath it for easy attachment and removal.
